Orthotics
Orthotics or custom-molded shoe inserts are used to treat a number of foot problems. Orthotics are designed to reduce the amount of flexibility of the foot and support the foot to maintain normal biomechanics or normal function of the foot. The keys to a good orthotic are to ensure that the material is sturdy enough to support the body weight of the patient but yet allow some flexibility when stressed during exercise. When purchasing orthotics three main components considered in their ordering include the weight of the patient, activity level, and shoe type to be worn most often. Orthotics should be comfortable as well as effective in alleviating a large majority of conditions they are prescribed to treat.
